The Ukrainian Scientific Center of Ecology of the Sea (UkrSCES), Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine, was founded in January in 1992 on the basis of the Odessa Branch State Oceanographic Institute. It is the main institution of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine in the field of marine ecological researches. UkrSCES – is a unique institution of all state ecological systems of monitoring within the Black and Azov Seas, which provides a whole complex of tasks of the ecological monitoring.
The main task of UkrSCES is scientific and practical providing of realization of public policy of Ukraine in relation to the protection, rational use and rehabilitation of natural resources of the Black and Azov Seas basin, and also providing implementation of international obligations of Ukraine, in relation to marine aspects.
 
     From 1993 UkrSCES is the International Regional Activity Center for Pollution Monitoring and Assessment (RAC PMA) of the Black Sea Commission. The Ukrainian Scientific Centre of Ecology of the Sea (UkrSCES) has been designated as an IODE Associate Data Unit (ADU) on 15 July 2014. In 2016 UkrSCES have become the OBIS Black Sea node (https://obis.org/contact/) and this allowed to join to EMODNet Biology community. In 2019 UkrSCES acquired the status of the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) within the IODE.
