The Ukrainian Scientific Centre of Ecology of the Sea (UkrSCES) is pleased to announce the commencement of its participation in the international project Black Sea SIERRA – «Harnessing complementary curricular preparedness via sustainable management in response to civil and military pollution on the coastline, tributaries and lagoons in Black Sea’s North, West, South zone», funded by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency.

The project began on October 1, 2023, and will run for 36 months until September 30, 2026. Its aim is to prepare and adapt decision-makers’ response capacity to current and emerging marine pollution through coordinated cross-border response to contamination caused by military actions.

The project consortium combines expertise from Black Sea countries (Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Turkey) and the Mediterranean (Italy), focusing on two key priorities:

Main Areas of Activity:

  1. Pollution Identification and Assessment:
  • Identifying specific types of marine pollution, including war-related contaminants, across approximately 90,000 km² along the Black Sea shoreline
  • Quantifying additional marine pollution from armed conflicts
  • Detection and assay of novel hazardous substances: war-generated contaminants, microplastics, and pesticides
  • Creating a map of underwater noise pollution to assess its impact on biodiversity
  1. Management and Capacity Building:
  • Providing a handbook on marine pollution assessment methodology and sources
  • Developing remedial measures for implementation by competent authorities
  • Conducting training workshops and meetings with decisional stakeholders and policymakers

The project is implemented under the EMFAF-2023-PIA-FLAGSHIP program, topic EMFAF-2023-PIA-FLAGSHIP-2-BLACK, project number: 101124670.

UkrSCES invites all interested parties and experts in the field of marine ecology and environmental protection to collaborate in achieving the common goal – preserving the Black Sea ecosystem.
