On February 19, 2024, as part of an international briefing dedicated to the results of the first six months of the MARMAPS project implementation, a presentation of the Black Sea SIERRA project – «Harnessing complementary curricular preparedness via sustainable management in response to civil and military pollution on the coastline, tributaries and lagoons in Black Sea’s North, West, South zone» – took place.

The project was presented by Yuliia Kotelnikova, Acting Scientific Secretary of the Ukrainian Scientific Centre of Ecology of the Sea (UkrSCES). She provided detailed information about the main goals and key objectives of the project, as well as the implementation of innovative solutions for marine ecosystem protection.

Among the main innovations of the Black Sea SIERRA project presented were:

  • Development of a prototype mobile filtration system to combat pollution
  • Implementation of training courses to strengthen the skills of key stakeholders in sustainable marine resource management
  • Methods for monitoring and assessing the impact of military actions on the marine environment

Acting Director of the UkrSCES, Viktor Komorin emphasized in his comment the importance of such international initiatives for collecting vital information about the impact of military actions on the marine environment and developing effective measures for ecosystem restoration.

The briefing served as an important platform for discussing current results and future prospects of international environmental projects in the Black Sea Basin, as well as for establishing synergy between various environmental initiatives aimed at preserving the Black Sea and its resources.
