On September 16, 2026, the project BSB00949 – ANEMONE PLUS was officially launched. The Ukrainian Scientific Centre of Ecology of the Sea is participating in the project as a partner.
The main objective of ANEMONE PLUS is to strengthen the resilience and sustainable development of the Black Sea marine ecosystem by improving the assessment of its vulnerability to anthropogenic and climate-related impacts. This will be achieved through enhanced cooperation among scientists, businesses, government authorities, and civil society, aimed at transforming scientific results into practical tools.
The expected outcome is a transformed approach to addressing marine environmental challenges in the Black Sea region, characterized by improved stakeholder engagement, evidence-based decision-making, and the implementation of advanced technologies and sustainable practices. This will contribute to a more competitive, innovative, and environmentally friendly economic environment.
Within the project, a comprehensive database will be developed to classify key stakeholders across the Black Sea region, along with a structured framework to support continuous cooperation among organizations from different countries. This framework will facilitate the integration and application of scientific results across borders, promoting regional collaboration.
A series of workshops will be organized to refine project outputs based on stakeholder feedback, including consultations with advisory groups under the Black Sea Commission, ensuring the relevance and practical applicability of the results.
Joint research activities involving multiple research organizations from four Black Sea coastal countries — Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, and Ukraine — will be carried out to address shared environmental challenges. ANEMONE PLUS will develop a comprehensive toolkit to improve biodiversity assessment, pollution monitoring, and environmental management.
Additionally, comprehensive guidelines and best practices for environmental management will be developed, providing practical recommendations for policymakers, businesses, and civil society groups. To ensure accessibility for non-specialists, ANEMONE PLUS tools will be presented in user-friendly formats (e.g., WebGIS) with intuitive interfaces and detailed user instructions. Training sessions will also be conducted to familiarize scientists with new tools and methodologies.
Transboundary cooperation is essential for the success of the ANEMONE PLUS project, given the shared nature of the Black Sea ecosystem and the interconnected challenges faced by coastal countries.
Furthermore, alignment with Horizon Europe projects ensures synergy, enhancing the impact of marine environmental protection initiatives by leveraging shared knowledge and resources. This coordinated approach maximizes the effectiveness of each project and contributes to the development of a comprehensive and unified strategy for marine protection and sustainable development in the Black Sea region.
